Amrita University and Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC), the technical branch of the Department of Telecommunications (DOT) under the Ministry of Communications, entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement is aimed at fostering innovation in the field of Trustworthy and Responsible Artificial Intelligence Systems.

The collaboration seeks to create tools for systematically assessing bias risks and to develop a strong framework for evaluating and certifying the fairness and reliability of AI technologies. This MoU aims to bridge the gap between academic institutions and government entities, promoting in-depth research and supporting India's advancement as a leader in the AI sector.

Development of Responsible AI

Highlighting their dedication to leading the development of Responsible AI, this partnership focuses particularly on mitigating preferences in AI systems and enhancing fairness evaluations to foster public confidence in these technologies, in line with the goals of the Government of India.

A critical component of Responsible AI involves the creation of AI/ML systems that are unbiased and equitable. The TEC has recently introduced a Standard for the Fairness Assessment and Rating of Artificial Intelligence Systems, aimed at bolstering public trust in AI, formulated following comprehensive consultations with stakeholders.

The objective of this partnership is to devise systematic tools for identifying bias risks and to set up a solid framework for the assessment and certification of AI technologies' fairness and reliability. The MoU was signed by Avinash Agarwal, DDG (C&B) from TEC, and Prof Krishnashree Achuthan, Dean Graduate Studies from Amrita University, formalising the joint commitment and roadmap for this initiative.
