BITS Pilani has inaugurated the Advanced Research Centre for Sustainable Energy Technologies (ARCSET), a multi-campus Centre of Excellence dedicated to pioneering clean energy solutions. This initiative underscores the institution's commitment to tackling global energy challenges through cutting-edge research and sustainable innovation. Designed to foster innovation and collaboration, the centre aims to drive advancements in clean energy technologies and create impactful solutions for a sustainable future.

Advanced Research Centre for Sustainable Energy Technologies

ARCSET will focus on critical areas such as hydrogen production, storage, and utilization, biofuels, renewable and alternative energy, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). ARCSET has been established as a Centre of Excellence to promote cutting-edge research and foster collaboration between academia and industry. The center aims to develop scalable, affordable solutions to reduce carbon emissions, enhance energy security, and ensure equitable access to sustainable energy resources. Through various initiatives, it strives to drive advancements in greener technologies and support sustainable innovation both in India and globally.

The event was graced by Padma Bhushan Prof. J. B. Joshi, Chancellor of the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, as the Chief Guest. Dr. Madhukar Garg, former Director of the Indian Institute of Petroleum and President of R&D Petrochemicals at Reliance Industries Limited, attended as the Guest of Honour. Prof. R. R. Sonde, Professor Emeritus of the Department of Chemical Engineering, outlined ARCSET’s vision, emphasizing its potential to develop scalable technologies to address global energy challenges. Prof. Suman Kundu, Director of BITS Pilani, K K Birla Goa Campus, described ARCSET as “yet another diamond in the jewel crown of BITS Pilani in its Diamond Jubilee Year.”

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Ramgopal Rao, Vice-Chancellor of BITS Pilani, said, “ARCSET embodies our dedication to tackling one of the major challenges of our times - global transformation towards sustainable energy. We are driving capacity building and advanced research with industry collaboration to enable these solutions that not only reduce carbon emissions but also ensure equitable access to clean energy resources”. 

BITS Pilani's new centre leverages advanced tools, innovative processes, and skilled talent to address India’s critical challenges. Focusing on areas like renewable energy, hydrogen, e-mobility, and the circular economy, it collaborates with industry leaders, start-ups, and policymakers to develop scalable solutions. Using molecular modeling, AI-ML, and high-throughput experiments, projects such as Hydrogen Valley and CO₂-to-methanol research are driving sustainable advancements, strengthening industry-academia partnerships, and accelerating India’s path to net-zero emissions.
