Day 3 Ends: Know How JEE Main April 2024 Difficulty Standards will Determine JEE Advanced Cutoff
How does the difficulty level of JEE Main influence the cutoff for the next level of exam which is JEE Advanced for IIT admissions? Let's explore below.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has concluded the third day of the JEE Main 2024 April session exam. The exam was conducted in two shifts, and candidates who took the exam reported that shift 1 was moderate, while shift 2 was easy. Although maths was lengthy, all the questions were doable, and Physics and Chemistry were easy.
The difficulty level of the JEE Main April session has been easy to moderate until now, just like it was in the January session. Additionally, considering the fact that registrations for JEE Main have been at an all-time high this year, experts and students anticipate that the JEE Main 2024 cutoff for JEE Advanced 2024 will rise.

However, it's important to note that determining the JEE Main cutoff for JEE Advanced involves various factors, not just the difficulty level and the number of candidates who appeared. The cutoff will also depend on the normalisation process, the number of seats available in the IITs, selection criteria, candidates registered, reservations, and other criteria considered by the authorities.
How does the difficulty level of JEE Main affect the cutoff of JEE Advanced?
The JEE Main exam cutoff is typically influenced by the difficulty level of the paper, with a higher difficulty level resulting in a lower cutoff. However, the JEE Main January and April sessions held so far have been rated as easy to moderate by both candidates and experts, indicating that the cutoff may be higher this year.
This year, NTA received a record-breaking 12.57 lakh registrations for JEE Mains session 2. In session 1, the number of candidates who registered for JEE Mains was 12,31,874. Whereas last year, 8,60,064 candidates registered for the January session and 9,31,334 in the April session.
Moreover, due to a higher number of registered candidates this year, the cutoff may also be higher than in previous years. This is because although the number of registered candidates has increased, the number of candidates to be selected for JEE Advanced remains the same at 2.5 lakhs. Therefore, to select the candidates for JEE Advanced, the authorities are likely to raise the JEE Main cutoff.
The cutoff score is set to ensure that a certain percentage of the top performers from the JEE Main exam are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced. Candidates who score above this cutoff are the only ones eligible to appear for JEE Advanced.
In summary, the difficulty level of the JEE Main April 2024 exam is a critical factor in determining the cutoff for JEE Advanced. The cutoff is established based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors to ensure fairness and select the most deserving candidates for the next examination stage.
Last year, the JEE Mains cutoff percentile for the JEE Advanced was: General - 90.7788642, EWS - 75.6229025, OBC - 73.6114227, SC - 51.9776027, ST - 37.2348772 and PwD - 0.0013527.
This year, it is anticipated that the cutoff for JEE Mains for JEE Advanced may be: General - 91+, EWS - 76+, OBC - 74+, SC - 55+, ST - 40+ and PwD - 0.11+.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has announced the date for the JEE Advanced 2024 exam, which is scheduled to be held on May 26. The registration process for the exam will commence on April 21. Before the commencement of the JEE Advanced application process, the National Testing Agency (NTA) will declare the results for the JEE Mains 2024 exam, which will indicate the qualifying status for JEE Advanced 2024. Candidates who have been declared "qualified for JEE Advanced" will be able to register for JEE Advanced, using their JEE Main 2024 application number and password.
