Education Ministry invites applications for new director of IIT Guwahati

TG Sitharam, who is currently the director of IIT Guwahati, was appointed the new chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) last month. Interested and eiligible candidates can apply for the post till February 28. 

The Ministry of Education has released an advertisement inviting applications for the appointment of a new director of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati. 

TG Sitharam, who is currently the Director of IIT Guwahati, was named the new chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) last month. Interested people can apply for the post till February 28. On November 17, 2022, Sitharam was appointed the AICTE Chairman. Though his five-year term as Director of IIT Guwahati will end in July 2024, his hiring at AICTE created a vacancy at IIT Guwahati, The Indian Express reported. 

Sitaram will preside over the AICTE for three years or until he becomes 65, whichever is earlier. The AICTE vice chairperson MP Poonia and a professor from IIT Kanpur were were among the other front runners for the job 

Candidates for the position of Director are required to have a PhD with a first class or equivalent at the previous degree, notably in a discipline of engineering, and at least five years of administrative experience, according to the government’s call for applications.  

Additionally, the candidate should have supervised PhD students and at least 10 years of experience teaching as a professor in a renowned engineering or technology centre or university. Sitharam succeeded UGC Chairman Jagadesh Kumar, who had been serving as acting AICTE Chairman since Anil Sahasrabuddhe had been relieved of his duties on September 1, 2021, upon turning 65 years old.
