Engineering colleges in Tiruchi get in touch with IT industries for development and promotion of industry-oriented course modules.

As per a report published in The Hindu, engineering colleges are approaching leading IT industries for the development and promotion of industry-oriented course modules. According to a latest circular issued by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), students who complete such course modules and also internships will get credits.

The council has signed agreements with leading IT industries and industry associations through which it intends to act as a bridge between edtech companies, academic institutions and students. It has laid emphasis on promoting new emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, data science and machine learning. Students will be given options to select electives according to their interest at graduate and postgraduate level in engineering and technology.

'Initiative will facilitate internships'

Heads of colleges said the initiative will make students industry-ready and more employable. It will also facilitate internships of the students in industry. Meanwhile, it has come to the fore that BSc students who have been given the option of lateral entry into BTech/BE programmes do not show interest in this provision as it increases the duration of the studies. The council treats BSc and BVoc degrees on par with diploma in engineering for the purpose of admission in BTech/BE programme through lateral entry.

“However, the hesitation on the part of the BSc students is due to the necessity to spend another three years for undergraduation in any of the engineering degrees. Students of Bsc and BVoc rather prefer to pursue MSc for two years, and obtain postgraduation degree,” said a principal of an engineering college in Tiruchi.
