GATE 2022 to have two new papers, exam centres may also increase

GATE 2022: IIT Kharagpur has introduced two new subjects for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2022. It is also expected that the GATE exam centres for the next year may also be increased by the exam conducting authority.

The two new subjects introduced for GATE 2022 are Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering (combined) and Geomatics Engineering. The decision was taken during a meeting of the National Coordination Board (NCB)-GATE held on May 22.

In the meeting, IIT Bombay, the organising institute of postgraduate engineering entrance exam in 2021, handed over its official duties to IIT Kharagpur which is the conducting authority for the GATE 2022.

As per the officials, GATE 2022 will now have 29 new papers. Last year, IIT Bombay introduced two papers Humanities and Environmental Science in GATE.  According to official information, a total of 14,196 students have enrolled for humanities subjects.

In the meeting, there was also a discussion on plans to increase the GATE 2022 exam centres. It was due to the fact that new centres opened in places such as Shirdi, Latur, Akola and Dhule last year were among the top 10 cities in terms of percentage attendance of students.

The relaxation in GATE eligibility criteria of allowing third-year students for the exam and to appear for two subjects simultaneously will continue this year as well.

GATE is a computer-based MCQ-based exam conducted for admission of students to postgraduate engineering programmes (ME/MTech) offered by IITs, NITs, IIITs and other institutes. As per the GATE exam pattern, there will be two sections in the question paper with a total of 65 questions to be answered within a span of three hours.
