The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has signed an agreement with the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), the Telecom R&D centre of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India, to develop an "Optical Transceiver Chipset for High-Bandwidth 6G Wireless Links." The collaboration is part of the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) 6G Call for Proposal by the DoT, aimed at accelerating research on the 6G ecosystem to drive the design, development, and deployment of 6G technology by 2030, focusing on Affordability, Sustainability, and Ubiquity.

The project aims to develop a chipset for high-bandwidth free-space coherent optical links, designed for 6G applications. These links will enable high-speed last-mile connectivity in rural and challenging terrains where deploying optical fibers is difficult. Additionally, the project seeks to create solutions for seamless high-bandwidth communication in remote areas through satellite connectivity. The agreement was signed at a ceremony attended by Dr. Rajkumar Upadhyay, CEO of C-DOT, Prof. Shalabh Gupta, Principal Investigator from IIT Bombay, and C-DOT Directors Dr. Pankaj Kumar Dalela and Shikha Srivastava.

At the event, Dr. Rajkumar Upadhyay, CEO, C-DOT, underscored the key role of indigenously designed & developed technologies in meeting the specific requirements of communication in our diverse country, reaffirming the commitment towards fulfilling the vision of our Honourable Prime on “Atmanirbhar Bharat” and Bharat 6G.
