MTech students protest against IIT Delhi 100% Fee Hike

IIT Delhi Fee Hike: MTech students of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi have gathered inside the campus to protest against the 100% fee hike announced by the technology institute recently. Though the students have gathered for a silent sit-in protest against 100% fee hike, Twitter is flooding with supportive tweets for the students against IIT Delhi fee hike.

Twitter floods with tweets against IIT-Delhi Fee Hike

This year, IIT Bombay, Guwahati, Mandi, Gandhinagar have announced fee hikes in the 20%-50% range for new entrants and enrolled students. Students’ collective, Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle (APPSC) IIT Bombay along with many other students have expressed solidarity with the ongoing protest.

 

Tuition fee hiked by 150%

The protestors claim that the massive fee hike will not only affect MTech students but also students across the programmes. According to the changes in the fee structure made by IIT Delhi, the total academic fee for full-time MTech students being admitted this semester (2022-2023) has been hiked by 100% to INR 53,100 (excluding hostel fees), earlier, the fee was INR 26,450. Within this amount, the 'tuition fee' has been hiked by 150% from INR 10,000 to Rs 25,000 for one semester.

PhD fee hiked by 64%

Not just MTech but the tuition fee for full-time PhD students admitted this semester has been hiked by 64% from INR 20,150 to INR 30,850 (inclusive of hostel seat rent). Additionally, for new hostels on campus, the mess and facility charges are INR 28,000 per semester and INR 4,273 per month respectively. The current amount is double the charges for the same in the old hostels, which was INR 30,000 per semester.
