IIT Goa permanent campus to be set up on a new site
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said the IIT Goa campus will be set up for sure. We are identifying the suitable land to set up the facility.
The Government of Goa has decided to identify another land for setting up the permanent Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campus in the coastal state after the Centre recently said the project site in Sanguem was not suitable for the purpose. As per a report published in The Print, the plan to set up the permanent campus suffered setbacks on two occasions.
In January last year, the proposed IIT Goa campus project was shifted out of Shel-Melavali village in Sattari taluka following protests by villagers. On the latest occasion, the Centre claimed the site at Cotarlim village in Sanguem was “inadequate” to set up the facility.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said, “The IIT Goa campus would be set up for sure. We are identifying the suitable land to set up the facility.” Ever since an IIT was allotted to Goa by the Centre in 2014, the institute started functioning in a temporary campus housed on the Goa Engineering College (GEC) campus located in Ponda. The IIT-Goa campus proposed at Sanguem in South Goa faced opposition from the locals.
People also staged protests in Panaji, around 60 km from the proposed site. South Goa District Collector Jyoti Kumarihad also issued orders imposing Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, as per which a gathering of five or more people within 200 metres from the demarcated site in Cotarli village panchayat with the intention to disrupt or delay the process of survey and demarcation of the proposed IIT site was prohibited.
