IIT Guwahati Researchers Develop Space Saving Furniture Suitable for Small Homes
A Prototype-Driven Innovation approach has been used to create a versatile piece of furniture capable of transforming into eight different configurations.
The IIT Guwahati research team led by Prof Supradip Das, Department of Design, has developed a unique customizable space-saving furniture for compact homes. This space-saving furniture design is suitable for small homes and customise the furniture according to the needs. The furniture aims to fulfil the need for adaptable furniture in houses with small spaces. The demand for multifunctional furniture is expected to be solved by the IIT Guwahati's space-saving furniture.
The research team has used a 'Prototype Driven Innovation' approach to create a piece of furniture capable of transforming into eight different configurations. The furniture comprises two side panels. round-headed bolts and cylindrical bars and is capable of being transformed into a chair, table or storage unit. In this modern era of compact furniture, this product will be ideal for small homes with limited space with ample amount of moving area.
"Our primary objective was to design furniture that optimizes the use of limited space by providing users with the flexibility to adjust it based on their specific requirements at any given time. With homes and apartments becoming smaller, people increasingly need furniture that can serve multiple functions without taking up too much room. By developing a highly customisable piece, we have aimed to combine practicality with versatility, enabling users to modify its shape and function to suit their daily needs, whether for seating, storage or as a workspace.” Says professor Das.
People of all ages will be able to modify the product into shape as per their requirements. Besides, a smaller version has been invented for kids to make a versatile option for any household to have furniture right when they need it without worrying about occupying space.
