IIT Guwahati retains 7th Rank among top 10 Engg Colleges, IIT GN Breaks into top 20 of NIRF

While total number of HEIs that participated in the ranking exercise in various categories and subject domains have increased from 3565 in 2016 to 8686 in 2023, number of categories and subject domains have increased from 4 in 2016 to 13 in 2023.

Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati has retained its position among the top 10 engineering colleges in the country in the National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF), achieving 7th Rank in ‘Engineering’ Category this year. The Institute has achieved 9th Rank in both ‘Overall’ and ‘Research’ Categories this year.

The Ministry of Education has announced eighth edition of India Rankings for the year 2023 based on ranking parameters identified and defined in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). Agriculture & Allied Sectors and Innovation are two verticals added to the ranking exercise from 2023 onward.

While total number of HEIs that participated in the ranking exercise in various categories and subject domains have increased from 3565 in 2016 to 8686 in 2023, number of categories and subject domains have increased from 4 in 2016 to 13 in 2023.

The ranking exercise for the year 2023 continues with the practice of providing a common “Overall” rank in addition to a separate rank for Universities, Research Institutions, Degree Colleges, and discipline-specific ranks in Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Law, Medical, Dental and Architecture & Planning.

Announcing the NIRF 2023 Ranking Results, Dr. Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, Minister of State for Education and External Affairs, Government of India, said, “Ranking and accreditation are vital for evaluating the quality of education provided by Higher Education Institutions. I am delighted to observe that the NIRF Ranking has undergone a positive transformation since its inception in 2015. it has served as a valuable tool for students in selecting universities based on their interest and subject domains in Higher Education institutions. Along with this, it has also helped the Institutions in identifying areas for improvement in teaching, research, resources, and other aspects. NIRF has fostered a culture of data organization and curation among participating Institutions promoting healthy competition at national and international scale.”

Prof. Parameswar K. Iyer, Officiating Director, IIT Guwahati, said, “As envisioned in NEP 2020, IIT Guwahati imparts technical education with a multidisciplinary mandate providing holistic development opportunities to its students. The results are directly reflecting the student and faculty contributions in this achievement.”

Highlighting the plans for coming years, Prof. Iyer said, “There is an urgent need to prioritise the lab-to-market proportion of our research-focused initiatives. The Institute is working closely to improve its Industry-academia collaboration to work towards the greater good of the society.”

IIT GN among top 20

IIT Gandhinagar has broke into the top 20 institutes in the Engineering category by being ranked at the 18th spot and jumped 13 positions from last year to be ranked 24th in the Overall category.

Advancing its pursuit of academic and research excellence, the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) has showcased extraordinary progress in the India Rankings 2023 announced by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) today. The Institute broke into the top 20 institutes in the Engineering category by being ranked at the 18th spot (from 23rd rank in the year 2022) and jumped 13 positions from last year (from 37th rank in the year 2022), to be ranked 24th in the Overall category, being the only higher education institute from Gujarat in the top 50 institutions of this category.

IITGN has improved its rank in the Research Institutions category as well by reaching at the 31st rank (from 34th rank in the year 2022) and again becoming the only Institute from Gujarat to feature under this category.

The Institute’s consistent progress over the years reflects its commitment towards excellence in academics, research, and innovation with a focus on interdisciplinarity, learning by doing approach, design thinking, liberal arts, and creativity, which are at the core of its academic programmes.

Speaking on this achievement, Prof Rajat Moona, Director, IITGN, said, “IIT Gandhinagar is focused on imparting world-class education in various areas of STEAM (i.e. Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) and engaging in impactful interdisciplinary research in order to contribute to India’s growth story.
