IIT Indore’s lab among chosen 100 5G labs by GOI
IIT Indore's 5G lab will focus on advanced quantum technologies, contributing to local development and showcasing research innovations on a global scale.
Indian Institute of Technology Indore has been selected as one of the prominent institutions in India to establish a 5G lab among the 100 institutes nationwide. The announcement was made during the inauguration of the 7th India Mobile Congress, which was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Bharat Mandapam.
IIT Indore director Prof Suhas Joshi said “It is a proud moment for the institute for being entrusted with this responsibility. 5G technology is meant to connect virtually everything including machines, objects, and devices. Improved quality of service (QoS) in terms of data rates and reliability are the key factors which would provide the users with a unique experience and connectivity. It will seamlessly connect a massive number of embedded sensors providing extremely lean and low-cost connectivity solutions,” as reported by Free Press Journal.
The telecommunications department of the Government of India has set up the labs for which the government will provide 80% of the capital expenditure and 100% of operational expenses for the next four years.
Institutions including the Indian Institutes of Technology, Indian Institutes of Information Technology, National Institutes of Technology, and other engineering colleges will foot 20% of capital expenditure for the labs.
The lab equipment will include 5G standalone infrastructure (mid-band), 5G SIMs, dongles, IoT gateway, router, application server, etc being shipped out starting in December. All the labs are expected to be fully functional by March 2024, an official said on the condition of anonymity, as reported by Hindustan Times.
