The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) has reached an exceptional milestone by filing 122 Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) in the year 2023, marking a historic feat in the institution's legacy of cutting-edge research and innovation. This achievement not only solidifies IIT Kanpur's reputation in pioneering research but also showcases its unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of intellectual contributions.
These IPR filings, comprising 108 patents, 4 design registrations, 3 copyrights, and 1 trademark application, along with 4 US and 2 China patents, signify IIT Kanpur's relentless pursuit of innovation across diverse domains. Noteworthy inventions include groundbreaking healthcare solutions like a portable medical suction device, continuous lung health monitoring systems, solid-state sodium-ion batteries, and an affordable Braille learning device for the visually impaired.
Prof. S Ganesh, Director of IIT Kanpur, expressed pride in maintaining the institute's momentum, stating, "Our commitment to pushing research boundaries has resulted in this record-breaking number of IPRs. It positions the institute as a leader driving positive change through intellectual contributions."
The year also witnessed 167 IPRs being granted, featuring innovations like a gas sensor for detecting ammonia at room temperature, wastewater treatment methods, tactile watches for the visually impaired, and diagnostic tools for bovine mastitis.
Prof. Tarun Gupta, Dean of Research & Development at IIT Kanpur, attributed the surge in IPRs to the focus on patent filing, government's supportive policy framework, and backing from the IPR management committee.
Prof. Ankush Sharma, Professor In-charge of Start-up Incubation and Innovation Centre, lauded the institution's achievement, highlighting its strong research foundation and efforts towards a sustainable R&D ecosystem.
IIT Kanpur's excellence extends beyond IPRs, securing the top position in the 'Innovation' category of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2023 rankings. The institute was also honored with the Best Assisted Technology Initiatives by Educational Institutesβ Award at the ATF (Assistive Technology Foundation) Awards 2023 for its contributions to assistive technology activities.
The IP and Technology Transfer Office at IIT Kanpur plays a pivotal role in disseminating academic technologies to the commercial sector, facilitating increased technology transfer transactions.
