IIT Kanpur reopens hostels for research students with 14 days mandatory quarantine rule

IIT Kanpur has now opened its door for research students after a gap of 6 months. However, students have to undergo mandatory 14 days quarantine in the designated hostels.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has announced that it has decided to reopen its hostels in a phased manner starting with PhD students. In a tweet, Abhay Karandikar, Director, IIT Kanpur said “After a gap of 6 months, when we closed the hostels in March due to #Covid19 pandemic, we would again be re-opening now for our PhD. students (and later for Masters students as well) in phases”.

On September 21, the first batch of about 280 PhD students started coming to the campus. The process will continue today; i.e. September 22, as well. Later, the hostels will be reopened for Masters students as well, an official said. The students returning to the campus will have to undergo 14 days' mandatory quarantine in the designated hostels. 

“Elaborate arrangements have been made to deliver packed food in each room during the quarantine. After the quarantine period is over, the students will go to their rooms in various hostels,” he added.

The institute’s Dean of Students Affairs office has made extensive preparations for their comfortable stay on campus so that they can return to their research work in the next few days, he added. Several other Institutions and Universities are also considering a staggered re-opening of campuses and strict social distancing protocols as they attempt to function amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Since mid-March, schools, colleges and other educational institutions have been kept closed following the outbreak of Covid-19. Since then the classes are conducted online to avoid academic loss.

The Ministry of Home Affairs, in its recent Unlock 4.0 guidelines allowed schools to reopen for students of Classes 9 to 12 on a voluntary basis to seek guidance from teachers from September 21. The Health Ministry had also issued detailed standard operating procedures to ensure that safety and health norms are followed as students head to schools after months.
