IIT Kanpur Transfers ‘Soil Nutrient Sensing Device’ Technology

The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) has revealed an innovative technology titled ‘Soil Nutrient Sensing Device and Method Thereof,’ developed by Prof. Jayant Kumar Singh and his team from the Department of Chemical Engineering. Designed with a compact form and advanced features, this technology is set to revolutionise soil testing. To enable its widespread adoption, IIT Kanpur has signed a technology transfer MoU with ScaNxt Scientific Technologies Pvt. Ltd.

This collaboration aims to transform soil health management by providing farmers with instant, data-driven insights, and fostering sustainable agricultural practices in India and beyond. The MoU was signed between Prof. Tarun Gupta, Dean of Research and Development, IIT Kanpur & Rajat Vardhan, Founder & CEO of ScaNxt Scientific Technologies in the presence of Prof. Raja Angamuthu, Associate Dean of Research & Development, IIT Kanpur and Prof. Jayant Kumar Singh (Inventor).

Soil Nutrient Sensing Device

The Soil Nutrient Sensing Device is a compact, smartphone-compatible innovation designed to provide real-time soil nutrient analysis, bridging the critical gap in timely soil testing for Indian farmers. Traditionally dependent on district laboratories, farmers often experience delays in receiving soil health assessments. This portable and user-friendly device simultaneously evaluates multiple soil parameters, stores data on a cloud server, and supports up to 250 tests on a single charge.

Utilising Near-Infrared (NIR) Spectroscopy, it delivers instant soil health insights directly to smartphones, eliminating the need for chemical reagents and complex procedures. By enabling precise nutrient management, the device has the potential to revolutionize agriculture, enhancing crop productivity, minimizing fertilizer overuse, and promoting both higher farmer incomes and environmental sustainability.

Prof. Tarun Gupta, Dean of Research and Development, IIT Kanpur, said, “The Soil Nutrient Sensing Device is a game-changer for Indian agriculture, addressing the persistent challenge of delayed soil health assessments. Through our collaboration with ScaNxt Scientific Technologies, we aim to transform Indian agriculture and take this pioneering innovation to global markets, supporting the vision of sustainable farming practices. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Prof. Jayant Kumar Singh and his team for this groundbreaking development.”
