IIT Kharagpur BTech in AI: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur is launching a new four-year BTech program in artificial intelligence (AI) starting from this academic year. However, the ministry's approval is still pending. As per TOI, the admission to BTech in AI will be held through JEE Advanced.

The intake capacity will be 30 students initially. This marks the introduction of a new BTech program at IIT-Kharagpur after more than twenty years. It is also the first among the major five IITs to offer a course specifically in AI. IIT-KGP also offers MTech and interdisciplinary dual degrees (MTech) in AI. In 2020, the institute decided that every student would take a course on AI.

As per TOI, during the course, a student will get to learn the mathematical foundations of AI, algorithmic foundations and architectural foundations of machine learning. Since AI has developed or progressed in two broad verticals language and image, the fourth component will be based on AI in language and AI in image. The fifth component will focus on applications in various fields like AI in agriculture, healthcare, finance and manufacturing.

Those opting for a BTech in AI would have a long-term advantage over those in computer science engineering, positioning them well for premium job opportunities. Students also believe that possessing strong skills in AI and machine learning has led to securing well-paying jobs with attractive salary packages.

Although IIT-Kharagpur will be the first of the five major IITs to launch the program, smaller IITs such as IIT-Patna and IIT-Guwahati have already established BTech courses in Artificial Intelligence.
