IIT Roorkee will work towards the development of navigation channels by employing eco-friendly techniques on 17 locations along the Ganga NW-1.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has collaborated with the Inland Waterway Authority of India (IWAI) to work on a project to stabilise navigational channels in the River Ganga. According to the official release, the project is a part of the Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP) sponsored by the World Bank. The project will be carried out in 17 locations along the National Waterway-1 (NW-1) across the River Ganga from Varanasi to Sahibganj. The project work is expected to last for 25 months.

IIT Roorkee will work towards the development of navigation channels by employing eco-friendly techniques on 17 locations along the Ganga NW-1. The institute conducted a morphological study of the River Ganga. It is expected that the project will prevent shifting of the deeper channel, siltation resulting in the formation of secondary channels, erosion of banks and other factors affecting the depth of flow in the main navigable channel.

“We feel a sense of pride and responsibility working for the development of the nation’s waterways”, said Z Ahmad, professor at IIT Roorkee. “This collaboration would benefit the farmers and the people residing in the Ganga belt. It would improve logistics through small jetties leading to the overall development of the region”, said Ajit K Chaturvedi, professor and director of IIT Roorkee.

IIT Roorkee has recently bagged the highest international salary of 2.15 crore INR during the placement session 2021-22. The placement drive witnessed the participation of many companies. The institute also received 437 offers including pre-placement offers. Mehta Family School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence has also been established in collaboration with the Mehta Family Foundation, USA, to cater to the increasing demand for data analytics and artificial intelligence experts globally.
