IIT Roorkee Director speaking exclusively to Shiksha.com said that the institute is well prepared to set up a campus outside India
The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee is also planning to set up campuses outside India including Taiwan. The institute has already started an joint M.Tech and PhD programme with Universities in Taiwan as it has collaborations with several universities there.
IIT Roorkee Director speaking exclusively to Shiksha.com said that the institute is well prepared to set up a campus outside India and if Education Ministry gives its go-ahead as it is subject to approval from ministry, once it is done it will set up its campus outside India.
Prof. K. K. Pant Director of IIT Roorkee said that in future the institute might open a campus in Taiwan. Prof Pant told Shiksha.com: “We are ready to set up campuses outside India, but, it also depends on the Ministry of Education and once we get approval we might move out. We are currently starting an M.Tech programme with the Universities in Taiwan and in future, we might open our own campus there.”
The Education Ministry is currently working on the feasibility of setting up IITs outside India and earlier this year it formed a 17-member committee to expedite the process of setting up global campuses for IITs. The committee led by IIT Council standing committee chairperson Dr K Radhakrishnan has also shared its recommendation for setting up foreign campuses of IITs.
As per reports, the offshore campuses of IITs may be named "India International Institute of Technology" and faculty members from the existing IITs will be sent on deputation abroad.
The committee identified seven countries as feasible for the development of IIT Campuses which include the UK, UAE, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Malaysia and Thailand. The committee has identified these countries for setting up new campuses.
The report states that IIT Delhi has already begun preliminary talks with the department of education and knowledge in Abu Dhabi to set up a campus in UAE. IIT Madras is also discussing with nations like Sri Lanka, Nepal and Tanzania, for setting up an international campus.
