Increase in fee structure, vacant teaching posts likely to be tabled at IIT council meet today
Besides IIT directors and chairpersons of governing bodies, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, senior officials of the Ministry of Education, UGC and AICTE will attend the 55th meeting of the council at IIT Bhubaneswar.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Council will discuss issues concerning student well-being, increase in fee structure, and vacant teaching posts at a meeting being held today after a gap of two years. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan-led council looks after the administrative, and other key affairs at the IITs. It includes directors and chairpersons of all 23 IITs and MPs.
The last meeting of the IIT council was held on February 22, 2021. Apart from IIT directors and chairpersons of governing bodies, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, senior officials of the Ministry of Education, UGC and AICTE will attend the 55th meeting of the council at IIT Bhubaneswar.
A report published in Hindustan Times said IITs may take up the issue of fee hike. An IIT official on the condition of anonymity said, “There is a need to make some changes in the fee structure to meet the requirements for running premier institutions like IITs. Therefore, IITs may seek an increase in the fees.” The official added there will be a discussion on the well-being of students even as suicides, in particular, will not be discussed.
Another IIT official said the government will review the efforts taken over the last two years to fill the vacant teaching posts at IITs. “The ministry has sent multiple letters and reminders to all higher education institutions, including IITs, to fill the vacancies. The ministry will review the measures taken so far to fill the vacant faculty positions,” the report added.
