JEE Advanced 2024: IIT Madras Introduces Sports Quota for BTech Admission
Half of the seats are reserved for women, and admission is only available through JEE (Advanced) scores or the sports quota list.
IIT Madras has recently announced the introduction of a sports quota, making it the first IIT to do so. Starting from the academic year 2024-2025, two supernumerary seats will be offered under the 'Sports Excellence Admission' (SEA) category, one of which will be exclusively for female students. Students who qualify for the sports quota will still have to qualify JEE Advanced 2024, and will be required to register on a separate portal, instead of the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) portal. The sports quota students will be required to register on the portal: https://jeeadv.iitm.ac.in/sea/.
IIT Madras will be responsible for conducting the JEE Advanced 2024 exam this year. To be considered under the SEA category, candidates must have secured a rank in the Common Rank List (CRL) or category-wise rank list in the JEE Advanced and should have won at least one medal in any national or international-level sports competition in the last four years.
The institute will prepare a separate 'Sports Rank List' (SRL) based on the total score obtained by the candidates in a specific list of sports, and seat allotment will be done based on this list. The introduction of a sports quota was proposed by IIT Madras director V Kamakoti in the IIT Council meeting held last year in April 2023.
JEE Advanced 2024 exam date is May 26. The JEE Advanced 2024 registration for top 2.5 lakh candidates of JEE Main 2024 will open on April 21. The syllabus for JEE Advanced 2024 has been released, and there have not been any changes to the syllabus despite the reduction in the JEE Main syllabus. The marking scheme and question distribution in the exam are subject to change every year. The JEE Advanced exam comprises two papers, each with three sections: Physics, Chemistry, and Maths. To be eligible for admission to the IITs, candidates must attempt both papers 1 and 2. The total marks for JEE Advanced are subject to change. The exam timing for JEE Advanced 2024 paper 1 is from 9 am to 12 noon, and for paper 2, it is from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm.
Via JEE Advanced, candidates can take admission in BTech, BSc, BArch, Integrated Master's and Dual Degree programs offered by the IITs. Those who qualify in the JEE Advanced exam are offered seats in IITs based on their course preference and JEE Advanced ranks via a common process by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA).
