Kalyan Kalita appointed in-charge principal of Assam Engineering College

Kalyan Kalita, the head of the department of mechanical engineering of Assam Engineering College, will take over from Atul Bora. 

Kalyan Kalita, head, department of mechanical engineering, Assam Engineering College (AEC), has been appointed as in-charge principal of AEC until further orders. He will take over from Atul Bora. 

Meanwhile, Atul Bora and assistant professor Sasanka Sekhar Sharma have been directed to proceed on leave immediately. This has come days after seven students of AEC were killed while six others, including three students, from the same institution were injured in a road accident. The incident took place at Jalukbari in Guwahati when the SUV, which was carrying 10 students of AEC turned turtle and hit a small pick-up van coming from the other side.  

Seven students of AEC died on the spot, while six others were admitted to Guwahati Medical College Hospital and a private hospital. The condition of the injured is stated to be critical. Meanwhile, a case has been registered and further investigation into the case is underway. 

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his condolences over the incident. He tweeted, "Extremely anguished by the loss of young and precious lives in the road accident at Jalukbari. My deepest condolences to their parents and families. Have spoken to authorities at GMCH. All possible medical assistance is being provided to those injured."
