NIRF Rankings 2023: IIT Madras Best in Overall, Engineering eighth consecutive year

This year NIRF Rankings have been announced in 13 categories, with over 8600 institutions participating in the rankings.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has once again emerged as the best institute in the ‘Overall’ category for the Fifth Consecutive Year and in the National Institute Rankings Framework 2023, NIRF Rankings. The institute has also been ranked number one in the ‘Engineering’ Category for the Eight Consecutive Years, right from the first edition of the Rankings in 2016.

This year NIRF Rankings have been announced in 13 categories, with over 8600 institutions participating in the rankings.

The NIRF Rankings were announced today in which IIT Madras has yet again emerged as a topper in the Overall and Engineering categories of the National Institute Rankings Framework 2023 conducted by the Union Ministry of Education. IIT Madras is once again followed by Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru at second and IIT Delhi at third position. IIT Bombay and IIT Kanour are at third postion in the Overall category.

Prof V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras on the achievement of the institute said: It gives me immense joy to share that IIT Madras has yet again emerged as a topper in the Overall and Engineering categories of the National Institute Rankings Framework 2023 conducted by the Union Ministry of Education. This is just a reinforcement of our efforts to be recognised as a global leader in research and education and it gives me pride that we are on track with the Strategic Plan outlined for IIT Madras.”

He said that all this has been made possible by the tireless efforts of the outstanding quality of faculty and students of the institute, staff who have contributed significantly to the institute's continuous progress, and unwavering support from our alumni across the world. “I also thank the Ministry of Education, the Government of India and the Tamil Nadu State Government who have reposed their trust in us. We look forward to being of service to the community and the nation,” IIT Madras Director added.

NIRF 2023: Enginerring Rankings

In the Enginerring category, as many as eight top ranked institutions are IITs, with IIT Madras at the top, followed by IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur and IIT Roorkee. IIT Kharagpur, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad are at sixth, seventh and eighth postion, National Institute of Technology, Trichy and Jadavpur University have been ranked 9th and 10th in the NIRF 2023 Rankings.

He added: “We will continue to take all necessary action to make IIT Madras a locally relevant and globally recognised institute."

In a feat without precedence in Indian Higher Education, IIT Madras held on its No. 1 ranking in the ‘Overall’ category for the Fifth Consecutive Year and in the ‘Engineering’ Category for the Eight Consecutive Year, right from the first edition of the Rankings in 2016.

The Union Education Ministry today released the eighth edition of the National Institute of Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings, India Rankings 2023. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has once again topped the list in the Overall category, while the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru is at the second position followed by IIT Delhi, while IIT Bombay has been ranked fourth this year.
The annual exercise outlines a methodology to rank Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across India in various categories & subject domains. The 13 categories include - Overall, Universities, Engineering, Management, Colleges, Pharmacy, Medical, Architecture, Dental, Law and Research.

The institutes are given scores based on – teaching, learning and resources (TLR), research and professional practice (RP), graduation outcomes (GO), outreach and inclusivity (OI), peer perception.
