“There are many brilliant students studying in local engineering colleges, but often seek employment soon after completing their engineering programme. We want to get such students interested in research. The programme is specially designed to benefit Goan students. I believe that research should be an integral part of the teaching-learning process and the SIP is an effort in this direction,” said NIT Goa director Gopal Mugeraya.
30 students to be selected by NIT Director
The NIT will invite applications each year from interested students under the SIP, and 30 will be selected by the director himself. The students will be placed with departments at NIT based on each one’s interests as gauged by the NIT director during the selection process. “Interns will be accepted for all the departments of the NIT,” Mugeraya said.
The chosen students will spend their internship attached to NIT Goa faculty members and with students pursuing PhDs at the national institute. The Director informed that the NIT has received INR 90-crore worth of research projects from different government and private agencies from across the country and abroad. The interns, he said, would greatly benefit by getting a peek into the research work being carried out on some prestigious projects.
Interns to be evaluated as per mini project
“The students will spend 45 days at the NIT and this internship period will be like an orientation towards research for them. They will also be provided with a nominal internship incentive of INR 4,500 for the 45 days spent,” Mugeraya said. At the end of the internship, the students will have to submit a mini-project and after its evaluation, they will be issued a certificate from the NIT Goa director. “The certificate will help students when seeking admission to higher education institutes after their graduation, or jobs in India and abroad,” he said. Mugeraya added that the programme will also benefit researchers at the NIT, as it will offer them different perspectives from the undergraduate students regarding the subject of research.
