Engineering student jumps to death in Telangana

The victim jumped off the 13th floor of a hostel building. He was a first-year computer science student of VNR Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering and Technology (VNRVJIET). 

An engineering student allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the 13th floor of a hostel building at Bachupally in Medchal-Malkajgiri district of Telangana on Thursday. The victim was a first-year computer science student studying in VNR Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering and Technology (VNRVJIET), a private engineering college affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad (JNTUH) 

The victim has also left a suicide note behind, which states that he was under stress over some personal issues. The police have sent the body for post-mortem examination. A case under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) has been registered and further investigation is on. 

Meanwhile, a group of students held a protest in front of the college building against the incident. The police were called to control the crowd and some of the students were also detained by the police.  

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan recently said in Lok Sabha that educational institutions like Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institute of Science, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) along with central universities witnessed a total of 122 suicide cases.  

A majority of suicides were reported from the Other Backward Castes (OBC), especially in Central Universities, the data presented by the Education Minister revealed. A total of 41 students from the OBC community ended life between 2014 and 2021. A total of 14 such cases were reported in Central Universities, followed by IITs and NITs with 14 and 11 cases, respectively. NITs alone reported a total of 30 student suicides in the said period. Meanwhile, 37 students died by suicide in Central Universities across India of whom 24 students belonged to the Scheduled Caste (SC) community.
