Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College closed all its functions indefinitely on June 11 amid the rising number of COVID-19 positive cases among second-year students. Apart from suspending the college, the authorities have also set up a COVID-19 detection camp inside the campus to run further tests on students and faculty members.
According to media reports, a total of seven students in boys hostel have tested positive for novel coronavirus. Out of the total, four students are hospitalized.
The college has conducted RT-PCR and RAT tests for other students as well. Sanitization of the premise and hostels is being done. On Friday night, the hostel students wanted to know how they would give examinations in such a situation following which the college is indefinitely suspended. Meanwhile, wearing of masks has been made compulsory inside the campus.
Fresh COVID-19 guidelines expected soon
Following the increasing number of COVID-19 positive cases, the State Health Department has sent a request to the state secretariat Nabanna to make the wearing of masks compulsory in the state. Considering the daily COVID case spike in the state, especially in Kolkata and North 24 Parganas, the Nabanna sources confirmed that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is likely to introduce some COVID-19-related restrictions soon.
According to the statement issued by the state health department, a total of 139 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. The rising number of cases is being reported across the country. Under such an alarming situation, it is expected that the central government would release some guidelines soon.
