Supreme Court to Hear Plea Challenging JEE Advanced 2025 Three Attempts Limit Rollback Today
A group of 22 aspirants for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) has approached the Supreme Court of India to challenge the sudden and arbitrary reversal of the eligibility criteria for JEE Advanced 2025 by the Joint Admission Board (JAB).
The JAB, which oversees the JEE Advanced for admissions into the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), announced a policy change on November 5, 2024, increasing the number of attempts to three. However, just days later, on November 18, 2024, the authority reversed this decision and restored the earlier limit of two attempts per candidate. To challenge this sudden change of eligibility a group of 22 JEE aspirants have approached SC. The Supreme Court is set to hear the JEE Advanced three-attempt policy rollback case today, Friday, December 20, before a bench of Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan.
The petitioners argue that this abrupt change has caused them significant hardship, as many had begun preparing for the exam with the expectation of a third attempt. The petition highlights that several aspirants had already registered for the JEE Main exam, enrolled in coaching programs, and altered their academic plans, including dropping out of other college courses and cancelling SAT registrations, based on the belief that the new attempt limit would be in effect. Furthermore, the petitioners argue that the decision made by the JAB was arbitrary, lacked transparency, and was taken without proper consultation or involvement of relevant stakeholders.
“The Petitioners are aggrieved by the abrupt and arbitrary policy reversal regarding the eligibility criteria for JEE-Advanced 2025 by the JAB, which initially increased the permissible attempts for JEE Advanced from two to three on 05.11.2024, only to rescind this decision on 18.11.2024, causing severe hardship and prejudice to the Petitioners and similarly situated students nationwide,” the writ petition states. Additionally, the petitioners stated in the writ petition that - “The abrupt and unexplained reversal of JAB’s policy within 13 days demonstrates a lack of due process or rational basis, thereby amounting to arbitrariness.”
The petitioners have urged the Supreme Court to direct the authorities to annul the press release issued on November 18, 2024, and allow all students who passed Class XII in 2023 to be eligible for JEE Advanced 2025 under the new attempt limit.
