Facilitate further studies of Ukraine returned medical students: Mamata Banerjee writes to PM Modi

While the government is looking for ways to facilitate the studies of the Indian medical students who returned from Ukraine, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged him to intervene in this matter. She has also requested an exemption from the NEET exam for these students to get admission to Indian medical colleges.

In her letter to PM Modi, she said that 391 students from West Bengal have returned from Ukraine and they are facing severe anxiety and stress due to an uncertain future. She provided suggestions to accommodate and allow these students for internships in the government medical colleges and admission to private medical colleges in the country.

"For other students in different years of the studies, they may be allowed to get admitted at the equivalent level in the private medical colleges against the existing seats and these medical colleges may be allowed to increase the equivalent number of seats for accommodating these students," she said, as reported by PTC News.

Mamata also highlighted the plight of these students as they have invested considerable financial resources and time to follow their dreams and now their studies have been disrupted due to the Russia-Ukraine war.

Mamata asks to relax NMC guidelines in wake of the unprecedented situation

She has also requested the government to relax the guidelines of the National Medical Commission (NMC) as this is an unprecedented crisis.

"The present stipulations of the NMC mandate that only those students who qualify for the National Entrance Eligibility Test (NEET-UG) can only get admission into the medical colleges. Many of the students who have returned from Ukraine do not meet this requirement. It is requested that the relevant guidelines may be relaxed as a very special case to accommodate these students," said Banerjee.

"Sir, this is an unprecedented war situation which calls for an extraordinary solution. Hence, I request your kind urgent intervention. I also request that as students who have returned to other states are facing similar problems, the steps that may be taken by NMC be implemented for other states as well," she added.
