Fake News Alert: Government to provide free smartphones to support learning

Press Information Bureau, PIB has issued a ‘Fake News’ notice against a notice regarding a government scheme that claims that the government will offer free smartphones for students to support learning. The notice has been circulating on social media for a long time. PIB has said that the news is fake and has debunked the scheme.

As per the notice, the Ministry of Education has issued a registration link for a free smartphone for students to support their learning. Busting the claim and clarifying it to be fake news, PIB Fact Check clarified that no such notice or claim regarding the distribution of smartphones has been issued by the Ministry of Education.

The bureau further added that the scheme is fake and that the “Government of India is not running any such scheme”. The notice also carries a link for students to apply on. The link has also been marked as fake and students have been warned not to use it.

"Government will provide Free Smartphones to all people across the country to support learning. Be part of the successful students that will receive a smartphone to help them in learning better," stated the now, fake notice.

Students are advised to believe only those notices that are available on the official website of the Education Ministry. Students are advised not to fall prey to such false claims and follow only verified channels of information for such schemes and announcements. Before applying for any scheme, students must ensure they are verifying such claims.
