An FIR has been lodged against students trying to attend classes wearing hijabs. a warning from Karnataka home minister Araga Jnanendra was also issued stating that there would be “no soft approach” anymore.
Karnataka Hijab Row: Following various protests against hijabs at educational premises, Karnataka high court passed an order banning hijabs, saffron shawls or any religious clothing inside classrooms in institutes that prescribe a uniform. However, media reports suggest that state police on February 18 lodged an FIR against about 20 students of a Tumakuru college on charges of violating prohibitory orders.
According to TOI, a historical private college in Mysuru city slashed its uniform rule on Friday allowing Muslim students to attend classes with the hijab. It is the first college in the state to take such a decision. DK Srinivasa Murthy, DDPU, Mysuru said, “Four students refused to attend classes without the hijab and were protesting. Some organisations extended support to them. I visited the college today and held discussions with all. Meanwhile, the college announced that it is canceling its uniform rule to allow the students to attend classes. ”
The report suggests, along with the first FIR, a warning from Karnataka home minister Araga Jnanendra was also issued stating that there would be “no soft approach” anymore. The minister has also directed cops to take action against those who flout the interim order. The principal of Empress College in Tumakuru, about 70 km from Bengaluru, lodged a complaint with Tumakuru City police against the students for violating prohibitory orders in the past two days.
Students are demanding liberty to wear hijab at educational institutions across the state. Muslim male students at Field Mar- shal KM Cariappa College in Madikeri said they won’t enter the college if girl wearing hijab are not allowed to attend classes. Demanding their right to attend classes wearing hijabs, students are staging protests. The hijab row spread to more colleges in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Friday — at Milagres College, Kallianpur, Udupi, Kavoor First Grade College in Mangaluru, and Government First Grade College in Puttur taluk, Dakshina Kannada. The Government First Grade College in Jidekallu declared a holiday after three students refused to remove their hijabs.
