On June 16, four faculty members of SAU were suspended on the grounds of ostensible misconduct.

All India Forum for Right to Education (AIFRTE), an association of teachers from various central and state universities have issued a statement in support of suspended South Asian University (SAU) teachers.

The association condemning the punitive actions against teachers and students undertaken by SAU administration and demanded suspension notices issued against faculty members should be immediately withdrawn.

On June 16, four faculty members of SAU were suspended on the grounds of ostensible misconduct. As per the faculty members, the four faculty members have been directed by the Administration of South Asian University to not leave Delhi without prior permission, vacate their offices in the university premises, and return their office computers as well as their official identity cards.

AIFRTE has demanded all disciplinary actions against students be withdrawn and treated as ultra vires until they maybe investigated through well-defined university procedures and norms.

AIFRTE in a statement stated: “Starting with a student demand linked to scholarships and research grants which should easily have been resolved within the university through negotiations by the administration with the help of the faculty, the situation was allowed to deteriorate by calling police on the campus resulting in an indefinite hunger strike by some students. A first year MA student Ammar had to be shifted to ICU and suffered a cardiac arrest which thankfully was reversed by emergency resuscitation but left him with permanent damage.”

It further states that on 16th June 2023, four faculty members were issued notices of suspension for asking that academic interests of the university community be protected. The University is currently without a functioning EC or Governing Board and lately is being run completely non-transparently and unilaterally. The situation should never have deteriorated in this manner and it cannot be allowed to continue any further.
