IGNOU has Potential to Become a Global Educational Hub, Says Union Minister Majumdar on its 39th Foundation Day

Union Minister Majumdar appreciated IGNOU for being a key contributor to the government of India's SWAYAM initiative with over 250 courses to enhance digital literacy and critical thinking.

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) celebrated its 39th Foundation Day. Union minister Dr Sukanta Majumdar graced the event as the Chief Guest while AICTE Chairman Prof T. G. Sitharam delivered the foundation day lecture during the event.

The occasion witnessed the union minister emphasising IGNOU's capability to become a global educational hub and setting an example of being a university for everyone. Meanwhile, the AICTE chairman uplifted IGNOU for playing a pivotal role in achieving the target of a 50% Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) by 2035. 

IGNOU Foundation Day: Innovations on Display

As a part of the foundation day celebration, Union Minister Majumdar and AICTE Chairman Sitharam inaugurated an exhibition where IGNOU students showcased their innovation at the Baba Saheb Ambedkar Convention Center, IGNOU headquarters. 

Speaking at the IGNOU Foundation Day function, the Union Minister stated, "The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is a transformative step towards building an inclusive, equitable, and globally competitive education system in India. Its focus on flexible, multidisciplinary learning, critical thinking, and creativity aligns perfectly with the mission of open universities like IGNOU. The NEP’s emphasis on digital and distance learning reflects the growing need for accessible and resilient education, which is vital in today’s rapidly changing world."

He further added "IGNOU, as a key contributor to the Government of India's SWAYAM initiative with over 250 courses, must continue to focus on enhancing digital literacy, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary studies. By doing so, the University will equip students with the skills needed for the 21st century and prepare them for the opportunities of the Fourth Industrial Revolution." 

New Programme Launched 

On the 39th Foundation Day of the University, the Union Minister launched the Bachelor of Arts (Education) program in ODL mode under the School of Education, IGNOU.
