Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has received a significant financial assistance of Rs 496 crores from the Central government's Higher Education Funding Agency (HEFA). This substantial funding will empower the university to initiate approximately 10 projects within its expansive campus. The official sanction of this financial aid in 2023 underscores a substantial commitment to the growth of JNU's infrastructure.
JNU Vice-Chancellor Santishree Dulipudi Pandit has announced plans for a new building dedicated to the School of Engineering, along with the construction of a Lecture Hall Complex and a trans-disciplinary research incubation center for the university, as reported by Indian Express. The research incubation center aims to foster collaboration among students from different JNU schools by providing a central hub for interdisciplinary studies.
Satish Chandra Garkoti, Rector-I at JNU said, as quoted by The Indian Express, “Research and academics will be improved by many folds at JNU and new programmes can also be added as there will be more space now in the campus.”
JNU Development Plan
The development plan includes the construction of two hostels - one dedicated to Engineering students and the other for Management students - expanding residential facilities within the university. Due to the unveiling of additional schools and special centres within JNU, former registrar Pramod Kumar emphasised the urgent need for hostel accommodations.
At present, JNU houses the Atal Incubation Centre, which was founded in 2016 as part of the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) by NITI Aayog, the Indian government’s flagship project to promote innovation and entrepreneurship.
Earlier in 2020, JNU got the approval of Higher Education Funding Agency (HEFA), MHRD for the funding of Rs 455.02 crore for the “construction of new academic buildings, hostels, research centres and installation of integrated and unified Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system”.
