Over 9,650 Vacant Posts in Central Universities, Government in Parliament
Numerous posts remain unfilled across various Central Universities, including positions for general candidates as well as reserved categories like OBC, SC, and ST candidates.
In a recent parliamentary session in the Rajya Sabha, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, the Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, addressed concerns regarding the large number of vacancies in various departments of Central Universities across the country.
Responding to a question posed by M. Shanmugam, Dr. Majumdar confirmed that numerous posts remain unfilled across various Central Universities, including positions for general candidates as well as reserved categories like OBC, SC, and ST candidates.
The Minister elaborated that vacancies are a result of several factors, including retirements, resignations, and increased requirements due to a growing student population. He emphasized that the responsibility for filling these posts lies with the Central Universities themselves, which operate as autonomous entities under specific Central Acts of Parliament.
He informed that the Ministry of Education, along with the University Grants Commission (UGC), actively monitors the situation and has issued directives to Central Universities to fill these positions through regular recruitment processes.
Dr. Majumdar highlighted that through special recruitment drives, over 9,650 positions have been filled recently. This includes:
Category |
Positions Filled |
---|---|
General |
5,724 |
Scheduled Castes (SC) |
1,281 |
Scheduled Tribes (ST) |
634 |
Other Backward Classes (OBC) |
2,011 |
The Minister reassured that the recruitment process is ongoing and that the government is committed to ensuring that all vacant positions, including those reserved for specific categories, are filled promptly. However, no specific timeframe for the completion of these recruitments was provided. This response underscores the government's dedication to maintaining adequate staffing levels in higher education institutions and addressing the representation of reserved categories in Central Universities.
