After a gap of two years, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has allowed universities to conduct viva for M.Phil and PhD admissions through offline mode. The UGC asked institutions to move to the online mode of viva-voca during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the lockdown due to the COVID-19 in April 2020, the UGC issued Guidelines on Examinations and Academic Calendar for the Universities and proposed that universities may conduct the PhD and M. Phil viva -voce examinations through video conferencing using Google, Skype, Microsoft Technologies or any other reliable and mutually convenient technology, subject to the approval of the concerned statutory authority of the university.

The UGC has also allowed varsities to continue conducting the viva through video conferencing by ensuring that it will be open to being attended by members of the Research Advisory Committee, all faculty members of the department, research scholars and other interested experts/ researchers, besides the research supervisor and experts or examiners.

“It is also imperative on the part of the university to maintain a due record of the same, including the report signed by Expert(s)/ Examiner(s) appointed for conducting the same," reads the letter.

It further reads: “In view of the above, the higher educational institutions may consider conducting the M.Phil/Ph.D viva-voce examination through offline/ video-conferencing using Google, Skype, Microsoft Technologies or any other reliable and mutually convenient technology.”
