UGC Urges Universities To Ask Students To Take Anti-Drug Vow

The University Grants Commission (UGC) took the initiative to communicate with vice-chancellor in universities and principals of various institutions regarding usage of drugs in campuses by students. UGC requested their collaboration in encouraging students to take a stand against the usage of drugs and the abuse of substances by pledging to refrain from such activities.
The directive aligns with the goals of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment's 'Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.' This initiative aims to curb drug possession and substance abuse specifically within campus and college environments. The UGC also sent out a list of “suggested activities” which will “spread awareness and information, education and communication (IEC) material along with best practices”, as well as a link to a portal to pursue them.
“It is evident that the students and youth are particularly vulnerable to the menace of substance use, thus making them primary stakeholders for this Abhiyaan. HEIS can take action at the Institutional level to sensitize the campus and other possible surrounding locations through their faculty, NSS volunteers, student clubs, etc. through regular interventions and activities on substance use prevention,” the letter, sent by UGC secretary Manish Joshi, read.
The UGC recommended that universities and colleges set up inclusive clubs dedicated to preventing ragging, fostering a substance-free atmosphere, and ensuring adherence to safety protocols. Furthermore, there was a suggestion to seek a commitment from students regarding responsible conduct throughout their academic tenure. This proposal included a template attached to the letter, intended for all students to sign as a pledge of their commitment.
Students To Take Anti-Drug Vow
The students’ pledge read, “I am aware that the possession, use, sale, and distribution of alcohol, tobacco, or any psychoactive substances are wrong and harmful. I shall refrain from using, possessing, distributing, or being in the chain of sale of these substances. I shall report observed irregularities to institution authorities. I shall support and engage in such educational initiatives. I shall cooperate with authorities and prevent substance presence in or around my institution.”
