IIM Calcutta COVID-19 containment zone lifted, students free to go home

Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta has lifted the containment zone set up around its four hostels and students staying at the hostels are free to go home. The institute set up the containment zone earlier this month, only students of the two hostels that were not part of the zone were allowed to leave.
As the offline classes are suspended and the institution is conducting teaching sessions online, a section of students is staying on the campus to attend online classes from the Wifi-enabled hostel. Meanwhile, the closure of educational institutions in West Bengal has been extended until January 31. The government has mandated that classes be held online as a precaution against COVID-19 spread.
According to The Telegraph, students who are staying back have been asked not to venture out without a pressing need. And in case of emergency or essential need, a student has to write to the authorities, explaining the reasons for stepping out and listing the places he or she will visit. On January 5, Kolkata Municipal Corporation declared three hostels of IIM Calcutta as containment zone as over 50 students tested positive at Tata Hall, Ramanujan Hostel, Lake View Hostel and New Hostel.
Meanwhile, the institute has also urged students to vacate hostels and go back home. The announcement was made considering the increasing number of COVID-19 cases. A member of the task force said the students had been advised to head for home because if more travel restrictions were imposed in the coming days, it would be inconvenient for them to reach home.
