IIT Bombay, The Ministry of Culture collaborate for The Indian Culture Portal 

The Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Bombay has collaborated with the Ministry of Culture. The partnership has taken place to launch the Indian Culture Portal. Under this project, the Ministry of Culture along with the National Virtual Library of India (NVLI) has taken up the task to curate and compiling the facets of heritage and culture. The task has been taken in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Bombay.

Ministry of Culture to compile facets of heritage and culture

The Indian Culture Portal has been designed to cover vast resources of Indian culture. The team has compiled it with a collection of historical and cultural importance from institutions all over India. This portal has been designed to benefit students and researchers working in the field of history and social science. A team of 50 people from the IIT Bombay team including the subject matter experts, management team and website development has collected information. The portal is available in two languages Hindi and English. The team plans to make it available in multiple Indian languages.

The Indian Culture Portal available for download on android and iOS app

The portal will be able to provide rare information that are difficult to find on private channels of museums. The ministry originally introduced the Indian Culture Portal in December 2019. The portal is now available to download on android and iOS app. The portal is free of any charges and can be accessed by anyone anytime and from anywhere. Incorporated with features such as social media sharing, digital flipbooks, QR code sharing and advanced search, the portal can give students and researchers access to rare books and manuscripts, historical archives, information from museums and information about art forms, music, textiles, and cuisines from across India. There is also a category where one can get information about traditional craftsmanship and oral traditions.

The portal has stories created which are from records of the National Archives of India which interlinks to the evidence in the Archives. The readers can get easy access to these archives.

Other features include photo essays, virtual walkthroughs of places, stories and snippets of rare books. There are books that are dated to the 14th century and on subjects like botany, architecture, cuisine and literature.

Portal equipped with “Freedom Archives”

The Indian Culture Portal has also loaded with the “Freedom Archives” to coincide with the event of the 75th year of Independence. The section has clippings of old newspapers, images, and rare books about the Heroes of the freedom struggle who made an impact. A section on Unsung Heroes of the Freedom Movement. Readers can go look at the “Did you Know?” section which is about famous personalities.
