Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay students have called off their hunger strike, which they have been holding since July 5. A meeting with the fee committee has resulted in a proposal of reduced tuition, hostel and academic fees that sits well with the protesting students.

The demands by the students were to revoke the recent fee hike, to revoke the Board of Governors resolution that recommended five percent annual hike in the fees, and to include student representatives in the standing committee for student fee matters.

As per the new circular, the hostel fees have now been reduced for all the students by INR 1500, and tuition fees for MTech new entrants have been reduced by INR 1500 and academic fees for all the students (excluding the tuition fees) have been also reduced by INR 550.

The tuition fees have also been reduced for the new entrants of PhD by INR 1,250 and the one-time fee component for new entrants has been reduced by INR 1100 as well. The fee committee has also added Students Representatives as permanent invitees, and the deadline for paying the fees has also been pushed forward from August 19, 2022 and August 31, 2022.

The Board of Governors has been asked to reconsider the annual 5 per cent fee hike while ensuring the partial rollback has been implemented by August 19. โ€œIf these criteria are not matched by the given date then we will plan further action,โ€ stated a PhD student.

"Any decision made by the fee committee will eventually have to be reviewed by the board of governors," said Falguni Banerjee Naha, the PRO at IIT Bombay, as reported by freepressjournal.
