Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati today conducted the 24th convocation in physical mode. A total of 1,620 students including 1,431 Male and 189 Female received their degrees in various disciplines. Gaurang Ramakant Kane (BTech, Engineering Physics) achieved the top score in the entire BTech/BDes batch, and Akshita Jain (BTech, Chemical Engineering) won the Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal. Among the graduating class, 9 students are Persons with Disabilities.

Prof. Jagdish Mukhi, Hon’ble Governor of Assam, graced the occasion as Chief Guest along with Rahul Mehta, Founder of Mehta Family Foundation, Houston, USAas the Guest of Honour.
Presenting the Convocation Report, Prof. T. G. Sitharam, Director, IIT Guwahati, said, “I would like to start with congratulating all the graduating students and their family members for the hard work and sacrifices. The faculty members, research staff and scholars are highly appreciated for their immense contribution to realize this rise in research citations and am hoping that we will continue this trend of improvement which has resulted in IIT Guwahati securing high rank in the recently announced QS Ranking 2023 where IIT Guwahati has secured 37th rank globally (41st in 2022) in the “Research Citations per Faculty’ category and rank 384 in World University Ranking globally.”
Further, Prof. Sitharam said, “It is noteworthy to mention that the research dimension of IIT Guwahati is broadening significantly and both private and government funded companies have funded various sponsored research projects to IIT Guwahati. These include, TATA Steel, ONGC, North East Electrical Power Corporation, Indian Space Research Organization, Purple Patch Services (an International company), Elint Technologies, HPCL Green, Agriculture and Rural Development Bank, National Rural Infrastructure Development Agency, Numaligarh Refinery Limited, OIL, INAE among others.”
IIT Guwahati attracts the brightest students from across the country for its Bachelor's, Master’s and Doctoral programmes. The strength of International students is also growing steadily. In the 28 years of its existence, more than 18520+ students have graduated from IIT Guwahati.
Delivering the Convocation address, Chief Guest Prof. Jagdish Mukhi, Hon’ble Governor of Assam, said, “In close to 3 decades IIT Guwahati has become known for its environment of academic experience in the entire country with its quality technical education. The Institution has produced globally competitive human resource and carried out research that is significantly benefited the society. This shows the social commitment of this Institute. The Alumni produced by IIT Guwahati comprise engineers, entrepreneurs, and technologists who have helped building new India.”
Further, Prof. Jagdish Mukhi said, “As IIT Guwahati celebrates its 24th Convocation today, I congratulate the achievers who worked hard to attain their degrees. I convey my best wishes to all the successful students who will venture into their professional world to transform the society by integrating their knowledge and skill with human values and compassion to create a better tomorrow."
IIT Guwahati is on its path to be recognized as one of the world’s top Institutes/Universities. By implementing NEP 2020 policies, IIT Guwahati is leaping forward by embracing the rising demands of interdisciplinary research areas and technology development including participating in offering courses in futuristic areas, providing thrust to start-up culture, Entrepreneurship at all levels and creation of jobs in the North East.
Addressing the students, Guest of Honour Rahul Mehta, Founder of Mehta Family Foundation, while appreciating the intellectual interactions he has been having with IIT Guwahati over the past several years, advised all the students to express gratitude to their parents for all the sacrifices they have made for them in this memorable journey. He also shared his entrepreneurial journey and suggested to the students that if you want to achieve your full potential, develop your whole person. A well-rounded person is a happier, more productive, and more fulfilled person. Be a “life-long learner”, was his message to the graduating students”.
During the reporting year, IIT Guwahati has commenced its academic activities at the newly initiated School of Business and will soon be admitting the first batch of students at its flagship programme, namely, the Masters of Business Administration (MBA).
Some of the unique expertise offered by the School include niche areas of Business Analytics, Human Resource Analytics, and Sustainable Finance. The School is expected to lend support to skill development and empowerment in the region, especially for small and women entrepreneurs.
Apart from this, the Institute has 322 research projects in progress with a total sanctioned value of about Rs. 478.55 crore. In the year under report, a total of 128 new projects with a sanctioned value of Rs. 136.62 crore were sanctioned with different funding agencies including the Department of Higher Education (DHE), the Departments of Science and Technology (DST) and Biotechnology (DBT), the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), the Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS), the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
Along with this, the newly launched Centre for Intelligent Cyber Physical Systems (CICPS) at IIT Guwahati is aimed at developing indigenous technologies. The Centre is targeting developing a minimum of five technologies a year.
These technologies will be developed indigenously and will generate direct and indirect employment opportunities. As many as 13 PhD students and 18 MTech students have already joined the CICPS and these students will particularly work on the technologies for underwater exploration.
IIT Guwahati has retained the 7th rank among the best engineering institutions of the country in the ‘India Rankings 2021’, achieved rank of 8th in the ‘Overall’ category this year (2021) and in the newly introduced ‘Research’ Category achieved 9th rank, declared by National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).
At present there are 78 MoU active with institutions and organizations from all over the world. During this coronavirus pandemic, IIT Guwahati has signed and renewed MoU with 13 International university/institutes/organizations.
