IIT Kanpur student drowns in Ganga

Victim Sejal Jain crossed the danger area and accidentally slipped from the open space into the water of the Ganga barrage and drowned. She was accompanied by her seven friends. 

A second-year undergraduate student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur drowned after slipping into the Ganga at Ganga Barrage, the institute said in a statement. On Saturday, the Security Control Room of the institute received a message that Sejal Jain, a second-year BS student in the Department of Earth Sciences, had accidentally fallen into the Ganga at Ganga Barrage. Sejal was accompanied by her seven friends, institute’s official spokesperson Girish Pant said in a statement. Sejal was immediately taken to a hospital where she was declared brought dead. 

A press release issued by the institute read, “Out of curiosity, Sejal Jain crossed the danger area alone and accidentally slipped from the open space into the water of the barrage and drowned. We mourn the untimely demise of a young bright mind and pray that God gives her family and friends the strength to bear this loss. With profound grief, we inform you of the tragic and untimely demise of one of our beloved students.” DCP, West, BBTGS Murthy, said the body has been recovered and sent for the post-mortem examination. 

IIT Kanpur had recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Institute of Engineering (IOE) at Tribhuvan University (TU), Nepal, for academic cooperation and research partnershipAs per the agreement, IIT Kanpur and IOE will cooperate in the exchange of faculty and researchers, exchange of students, joint research and joint activities promoting science, engineering and humanities education.
