Indian students in Ukraine: State governments request Centre for safe evacuation

Scores of Indians mostly students are stranded in Ukraine, the state governments are requesting the Central government for a safe evacuation of people of their respective states.

Many Indians mainly medical students are stranded in Ukraine amid the Russian invasion of the country. As per reports, nearly 2,500 are from Gujarat and 2,320 from Kerala. Amid the escalating stress among the family members of these students in India, many state governments have requested the Centre for the safe evacuation of these students.

Tamil Nadu government estimates nearly 5,000 students and emigrants from the state are stuck in the war-hit country. It has announced that it would bear all expenses related to the safe return of these people. As far as other states are concerned, 100 residents, including 70 students, of Chhattisgarh and 1,200 students from Maharashtra are struck in Ukraine.

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang said that his government is coordinating with the Centre to bring back 20 students of their state.

Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the State Assembly V D Satheesan have written to the external affairs minister Jaishankar for the safe evacuation of people.

Embassy advises Indians not to move to border posts without coordination

The Embassy of India in Kyiv has asked the Indians in Ukraine not to move any border posts without prior coordination with officials of the government of India and said for Indians in western cities of Ukraine, it is comparatively safer to be there as compared to reaching border checkpoints without coordination.
