IIT (ISM) Dhanbad's research reveals significant decrease in snow cover in Hindu Kush Himalayan region

An 'eye opener' research by IIT (ISM) Dhanbad revealed significant decrease in snow cover of low altitudinal region of Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region and calls for efforts to lower greenhouse gases emission and implementing carbon capture technology in oil and gas sector.

The recent research by the department of applied geology of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad has shown nearly 5%-15% decline in snow cover in the central zone and eastern zone of Hindu Kush Himalayan region.

“The eye opener research based on analysis of seismic data of the regions from 2000-2017 further calls for initiation of efforts to reduce or control emission of greenhouse gases like carbon oxide (CO) and Methane (CH4),” said dean media and branding, IIT (ISM) Rajni Singh, as reported by Telegraph India.

IIT (ISM) Dhanbad Research Details

The research was being conducted since 2017 and now the outcome is revealed to the media this week. The research has underlined the need for usage of low carbon energy sources besides development of wind, solar and hydro power.

The study was conducted as part of the research of PhD scholar Nirasindhu Desinayak under the guidance, associate professor of applied geology department Anup Krishna Prasad attributed the depletion of snow cover and melting of glaciers etc to warming tendency of the atmosphere (troposphere) over the Himalayas.

The IIT (ISM) Dhanbad research team also got the additional support and guidance of three US-based experts including Professor Menas Kafatos, director of the same institute at Chapman University besides Ghassem R Arsar, professor Hesham El Askary of Centre of Excellence in Earth Systems Modelling and Observations, Schmid College of Science and Technology, Chapman University, USA, and senior vice-president for Science, Universities Space Research Association (USRA), Columbia.
