As per latest media reports, Himachal Pradesh National Law University (HPNLU) Shimla has become a participating institute of CLAT 2019. This means that for the academic session, 2019-20, HPLNU admissions will be done through CLAT 2019 only. The university has done away with its own entrance exam, HP National Law Entrance Test (HP-NLET).

Till 2018, HPNLU Shimla conducted HP-NLET in order to shortlist aspirants for admission in programmes such as – BA/BBA LLB (Hons), LLM and PhD in law. HP-NLET was also known as Himachal Pradesh National Law University Entrance Test (HP-NET). In this law entrance exam candidates were evaluated out of 150 marks. On the basis of HPNET ranks, 60 seats were available for admission in BA/BBA LLB (Hons) programme, 20 seats were available in one year duration LLM course and 10 seats were on offer in PhD. Know seats available for admission basis HPNLET ranks here.

Candidates meet HP-NLET eligibility criteria if they have cleared their Class 12 or equivalent examination (10+2 system) with at least 50% aggregate marks (for unreserved/OBC/Specially Abled Person (SAP)/NRI/NRI Sponsored Categories/Kashmiri Migrants) from a recognised board. Candidates belonging to SC/ST category are eligible to apply if they have secured 45% marks in 10+2 or equivalent exam. Apart from this, aspirants who have appeared for their qualifying exam in April/May 2019 are also eligible to apply for HPNLET.

Any aspirant who has completed his 10+2 or equivalent examination through an Open University (without possessing any basic qualification) is not eligible to apply for the law course admissions.

HPNLET 2019 has not been conducted yet. However, candidates can go through last year's exam analysis below.

CLAT was conducted on May 13 and stories related to its apathy towards the students have been the staple diet of the young NLU aspirants since then. Most of the aspirants want CLAT 2018 to be conducted again. Students appeared for HPNLET 2018 in this atmosphere of uncertainty.

Let me discuss a few points related to HPNLET 2017 before I come to HPNLET 2018.

In 2017 HPNLET did not have many errors, but there were at least a dozen incorrect responses marked in the answer key which they released. They rectified most of the answers subsequently, but even the "revised" answer key had 4 errors. As per HPNLU people, the President of India is elected by all the members of the parliament and state assemblies! My fundamental question is how can Himanchal Pradesh NLU have such people in their panel who do not know the correct answers to the questions they create themselves.

As if CLAT 2018 jolt was not enough, HPNLET 2018 only exacerbated the situation. The test had not less than 25 typos as a consequence of which a few of the questions were incomprehensible. In fact, the instructions given on the cover page of the test were incorrect and the students got extremely worried on seeing them! Go through HPNLET 2018 cutoff and detailed analysis here.

HPNLET 2019 has not been conducted yet. However, candidates can go through last year's student reaction below.

HP-NLET 2018 was conducted today, May 20, at about 20 test centres across the country. The exam was conducted by Himachal Pradesh National Law University (HPNLU), Shimla in order to provide admission to candidates in BA/ BBA LLB, LLM, and PhD Law programmes offered by it.

In HP-NLET exam for UG admissions, candidates had to attempt a total of 150 multiple choice questions divided into four sections: General Awareness, Legal Awareness & Legal Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, and English. Candidates had to complete the exam in a duration of two hours (10:00 AM – 12:00 Noon).

Shiksha reported live from Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, Delhi University where a total of 556 BA/BBA LLB students appeared for the exam. Most of the UG Law aspirants who took the Law entrance exam shared that the paper was easy but contained a lot of errors. Read complete HPNLET 2018 Student Reaction here.
