PU UGLAW 2020 entrance exam was cancelled and, admission was to be held on a merit basis. However, the admission process is now postponed after HC intervened. Read here.
Panjab University has stalled the admission process of PU UGLAW courses i.e. BCom and BA LLB courses for some time now. The admission process has been interrupted after the university decided to cancel the entrance exam - PU UGLAW 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic. The matter reached to Punjab and Haryana High Court through a petition filed by some candidates. Following which, the HC had asked the exam authority to reconsider their decision to cancel the examination.
Now, the university has released the notification as under;
"Considering the COVID-19 situation, Panjab University had scrapped the UGLAW entrance test for admission to above-mentioned courses. The same has been challenged vide CWP No. 12832 of 2020 titled as Saurav Rao vs. PU, wherein as per the orders dated 01.09.2020 of the Hon'ble Punjab & Haryana High Court, Chandigarh, the admission to the above course is suspended till the University takes its decision in pursuance to the directions of the Hon'ble High Court. Therefore, it is for the information of the candidates seeking admission to above-mentioned courses that further admission schedule will be intimated on website uglaw.puchd.ac.in."
The petition filed on September 1 stated, "The submission of the Petitioners who have applied for the 5-year law course is that the excuse of Covid-19 for scrapping the entrance test is not valid when in fact the University is holding entrance exams for other courses including the three-year law course for the same academic session. They further submit that the 12th standard marks as a sole criterion for determining the suitability of a candidate for admission to the 5-year law course would not be either a reasonable or a reliable one. It renders the
admission process arbitrary and violative of Article 14 of the Constitution. Reference is made to the recent orders of the Supreme Court declining to postpone or scrap the holding of entrance exams for courses elsewhere in the country. "
The revised admission criteria and the process will be shared by the Panjab University anytime soon. As of now, the application process has been completed on August 22 itself.
