Anna University Tamil Culture & Heritage Courses: A mandatory course on Tamil Culture and Heritage has been introduced for engineering students with an aim to give impetus to local wisdom, culture and heritage. As the course is mandatory for all students, it would be taught in the first and second semester of the technical course.

Courses designed to spread awareness about rich culture & heritage

According to media reports, the Vice Chancellor of Anna University, R Velraj informed that the varsity had been working on the curriculum for the courses. The same is expected to be before the commencement of the first semester classes for this academic year. He added that the decision was taken to include the subject to ‘make the students connect with their roots, appreciate, and preserve it’.

To serve the purpose, the varsity has designed two unique courses - Ariviyal Tamil (scientific thoughts and studies in Tamil) and Tamilar Marabu (Heritage of Tamils). First semester students will be taught Ariviyal Tamil and the second semester’s curriculum would include Tamilar Marabu.

The courses are designed with the aim to provide insight into the rich cultural heritage of the state. It would also focus on the engineering techniques that were practiced in Tamil Nadu’s architectural marvels.

Medium of instruction in English and Tamil both

Meanwhile, the course will be printed in both Tamil and English as the medium of instruction. However, the varsity will prefer preparing the same in Tamil as this would help students to further improve their Tamil Language. For the students joining from other states applying through CBSE, the material would also be provided in English to help them understand the same.

The varsity is focused on not only the Tamil language but also other languages including English. The varsity has also included an English practical laboratory as a paper. This has been introduced in the first semester as well to help improve proficiency in the language.

Meanwhile, Anna University has also decided to teach students FinTech and blockchain in the main semester. Other foreign languages are expected to join the list in second semester in the communication laboratory.
