Amid the nationwide lockdown due to coronavirus pandemic, the government of Meghalaya has made one of its corona centres at IIM Shillong Mayurbhanj Complex Nongthymmai. According to IIM Shillong, the institute’s facilities had been inspected by Conrad Sangma, Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong Deputy Chief Minister and Lahkmen Rymbui Health and Education Minister along with Senior Officials of Health department. The institute informed that 116 rooms were made available for the Corona Care Centre that will be kept open for 24 hrs. Shishir K Bajoria Chairman of Board of Governors (BOG) of IIM Shillong in his letter to Chief Minister of Meghalaya offered the new campus at Umsauli to the State Government.

However, the opposition parties of the state have raised their concerns regarding the facility provided to the poor class. One of the opposition leaders stated that many labourers from other districts, who were involved in road construction etc, were deserted at the project sites, including village areas. He further stated that some labourers working with a PWD contractor at the Assam-Nagaland border in his LAC, under Na-Pukhuri Gaon Panchayat, were deserted and they were facing hurdles in getting ration, etc.

He further informed that apart from daily wage earners, rickshaw-pullers, contractual labourers and the like, those involved in several self-employment activities such as barber shops, carpentry shops, paan kiosks, fabrication units, running small eating joints, carriage of green tea leaves and other goods, tailor shops, etc, were now deprived of income. As of now, India has witnessed more than 1,700 cases of coronavirus.
