Abhyuday Pai, Assistant Dean for Graduate International Recruitment at the University at Buffalo, addresses these concerns, outlining the university's proactive support for students and the wealth of opportunities available in the U.S.

The transition to a new U.S. administration often raises questions about potential policy changes. While the specifics of upcoming policies remain uncertain, there are apprehensions among international students about possible shifts in visa regulations and job opportunities. Abhyuday Pai, Assistant Dean for Graduate International Recruitment at the University at Buffalo, addresses these concerns, outlining the university's proactive support for students and the wealth of opportunities available in the U.S.

Q. With the Trump administration’s policies, what are your thoughts on the apprehension among international students regarding visa and job opportunities?

Abhyuday Pai: My advice to students is not to worry. Policies targeting illegal immigrants do not affect F-1 visa holders who are in compliance. Concerns about job opportunities or local preferences are largely unfounded. The U.S. job market rewards merit, and the best candidates—regardless of nationality—secure positions. There haven’t been any significant changes to visa policies yet, and even if changes occur, they would take time to implement. Students should focus on leveraging the high-quality education and opportunities the U.S. offers instead of being deterred by uncertainty.

Q. How does the University at Buffalo view India in terms of Indian students? Which courses do most students pursue?

Abhyuday Pai: The maximum number of Indian students enroll in Computer Science, particularly in the M.S. program. Students from regions like Hyderabad form a significant portion of this group. Recently, we’ve seen a shift due to our specialized Master of Science programs. Previously, students would enroll in Computer Science and choose concentrations like Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Data Science. Now, we offer dedicated degrees in these areas, such as an M.S. in Artificial Intelligence, M.S. in Data Science, and M.S. in Cybersecurity. These focused programs attract students interested in niche fields.

Q. What are the job opportunities for graduates of these programs in the U.S.?

Abhyuday Pai: Job opportunities are strong, especially for Computer Science graduates, with a 90% employment rate within six months of graduation. Students also benefit from the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program. Success depends significantly on how well students prepare during their studies. On-campus opportunities like research assistantships, entrepreneurial clubs, and initiatives like the Blackstone Launchpad help students develop skills and ideas for startups.

While the demand for Computer Science professionals remains high, the field is becoming saturated. For example, if there are 1,000 jobs, there may be 10,000 candidates. Therefore, we encourage students to think interdisciplinarily. Programs that combine Computer Science with fields like Health Sciences, Biostatistics, or Bioinformatics are highly promising. Health Sciences, in particular, is a growing field with fewer applicants compared to the opportunities available.

Q. Could you provide an estimate of the number of Indian students at the University at Buffalo?

Abhyuday Pai: The University at Buffalo has around 31,000 students, of which 20% are international. More than half of these international students are from India. This includes students at undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels across various disciplines.

Q. What scholarships and financial assistance are available for international students?

Abhyuday Pai: We offer a few merit-based scholarships for international students, though they are limited and tied to priority deadlines. These are awarded to students with strong undergraduate academic records. Our tuition is very affordable, providing excellent value and a high return on investment (ROI). For instance, Computer Science graduates from UB have an average salary of $100,000, making the ROI very attractive. UB also offers extensive research funding—over $500 million annually—providing ample opportunities for research assistantships. Additionally, students can work on-campus jobs to cover living expenses.

Q. What are the work policies for international students on F-1 visas?

Abhyuday Pai: International students can work up to 20 hours per week on campus during the academic year and up to 35 hours per week during breaks. In their first year, F-1 students are restricted to on-campus jobs. After completing two semesters, they can apply for internships relevant to their field of study. UB’s Career Management Center supports students with resume building, interview preparation, and job placements. Additionally, we offer a 360-degree development program to enhance soft skills, communication, and presentation abilities.

Q. Why should students consider the U.S. for education and career-building opportunities?

Abhyuday Pai: The U.S. remains unparalleled in terms of opportunities for international students. From research assistantships to career placements, no other country offers the same level of support and infrastructure. Programs like OPT, which allow students to work for three years without additional visa applications, are designed to benefit international students. Universities like UB go the extra mile by organizing cultural activities and offering more than 500 student clubs to help international students feel at home. In terms of research funding, career opportunities, and skill development, the U.S. continues to be the epicenter of global education and innovation.
