MBBS in Hindi: Not a feasible option, opine doctors
Uttarakhand education minister Dhan Singh Rawat's announcement that the state will start the MBBS course in Hindi has drawn criticism from doctors, read here to know more.
After Madhya Pradesh, now Uttarakhand is also planning to start MBBS course in Hindi. Recently, Uttarakhand education minister Dhan Singh Rawat stated that the state is planning to start the MBBS course in Hindi.
As per him, this will help students from Hindi medium backgrounds to compete better with students of English-medium schools. However, the doctors do not agree with his views.
Dr Arun Kumar Gupta, president of the Delhi Medical Council said, “Most books that are a part of the modern medical education have been written and published in the west, by default, in the English language. The medium of instruction can be changed to Hindi but it is not possible to change the academic vocabulary of the MBBS curriculum. Even if the books are translated, almost all reputable research papers and journals are published in English,” as reported by Indian Express.
“When we were students, we also took all our classes in English. In the entire country, there is not a single college which is conducting MBBS, MDS, or BDS classes in Hindi or any other regional language. The teachers, by default, are trained to teach in English as they’ve also been taught in the same language. So, if the course has to be launched in Hindi, then the teachers will also have to be trained along with translating the entire syllabus, which is going to be a tedious process,” Gupta added.
Gandhi Medical College in Bhopal offers three subjects of MBBS in Hindi
Though Prime Minister Narendra Modi always talks about the benefits of teaching courses in local and regional languages, when Madhya Pradesh Medical Education Minister Vishwas Sarang talked about starting the MBBS course in Hindi, the National Medical Commission (NMC) had said that it is not feasible. Still, the Gandhi Medical College in Bhopal started three subjects of MBBS including Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry in Hindi from the current year.
