AIIMS BSc Optometry student dies; Student hold protest against hospital administration
The AIIMS students are protesting against the hospital's administration after a first-year student of BSc Optometry died due to the non-availability of an ambulance from AIIMS.
In an unfortunate incident, Abhishek Malviya, a first-year student of AIIMS BSc Optometry died due to the unavailability of an ambulance on time. As per reports, he didn't get the ambulance as the student was not residing on the AIIMS campus. Ever since, the paramedical student died, the students are protesting against the hospital administration and alleging that the student died due to the negligence of the hospital authorities.
As per reports, the deceased student had complained of suffocation and breathing issues three days back but when his friend asked for help, the hospital administration reportedly denied an ambulance as the student was not living in the AIIMS hostel and such services are not supposed to be extended to students living outside the hospital campus.
It took 2-3 hours for Abhishek to reach the AIIMS emergency, where he was declared critical following which he was shifted to the new private ward of the hospital. He was later diagnosed with H1N1 (influenza) and his lung function collapsed when he was placed on ECMO.
The Optometry Students Association (OSA) of AIIMS said in a statement, “When the doctors declared him dead the next morning, they said he was having multiple lungs infections, including influenza, Covid-19, and bacterial infections. He was on ECMO for artificial lungs activity," as reported by News 18.
“Had there been hostels for us, Malviya would have survived. It all happened because of AIIMS administration’s negligence, and it can happen to others in the future as well. We want assurance of hostel accommodation from AIIMS administration so that such tragic incidents don’t occur again in the future," added the OSA statement.
AIIMS RDA/SYS/SNA issued joint press release
In the press release, the AIIMS RDA/SYS/SNA mentioned that they stand in solidarity with the demands of OSA that hostels should be provided to each student enrolled under UG, PG, and PhD courses & resident doctors as soon as they get admission to the institute.
The press release reads, "OSA official statement mentions inhuman attitude of hostel superintendent towards their previous approaches. If this is found to be true, then strict action should be taken against the guilty authorities."
