The Central government has issued a gazette notification for establishment of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Madurai. AIIMS Madurai will be established on 222.24 acres of land at Thoppur at a cost of Rs 1264 crore. In January 2019, the foundation stone for AIIMS Madurai was laid down by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The gazette released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) stated that, "In exercise of the powers conferred by the proviso to sub-section (1) of section 3 of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Act, 1956 (25 of 1956), the Central Government hereby establishes the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences at Madurai in the State of Tamil Nadu."
As per the media reports, the site has been cleared, however, the construction work is yet to begin.
While commenting on the development, Madurai MP Su Venkatesan told a media house that βthis official notification by the central government is encouraging. This is a very special day for Madurai and the Southern districts. I thank the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for this gesture which is a boon to the region.β
Chief co-ordinator of the AIIMS for Madurai Movement V S Manimaran also expressed his satisfaction over the announcement and said it is indeed a very wonderful day for Madurai and Southern districts.
He further added " Since the AIIMS Madurai will be constructed with a loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the building will be constructed over a period of 45 months after the release of the loan, the step should be taken to obtain the loan without much delay.
